Fossil Beach

Who knows how old this fossil is?

If there was one things that I was sure my mom would like to see in the Krabi area is was Fossil Beach. If you do not understand the significance of fossils and just how amazing it is that something could survive for this long exposed to all the elements you might find this a boring stop and feel it wasn't worth while. Seeing that this was right up my mum's alley, we loved it...

This site crops out as a rocky beach and can be clearly seen during maximum low tide. The pan-shaped outcrop is a result from the sinking of underlying limestone beds. The fossil bed consists of stubby shaped gastropods of the family Viviparidae. They range in size from 1 to 2 cm. From far away it looks like someone has broken slabs of concrete and placed them in neat patterns in the water, but it is all natural stone.
