Singapore Botanical Gardens - The Orchids

Spiders

Well this was what my mom's second visit to me was all about. I am sure she wanted to see me as well but the Orchids was a big highlight and the main reason for her visit.

So off to Singapore we went in search for the most beautiful flowers and did we find them. Absolutely.

The idea of a national garden in Singapore started in 1822 when Sir Stamford Raffles (The Singapore Sling and Raffles Hotel guy), developed the first 'Botanical and experimental garden' at Fort Canning. In the early years the gardens played a important role in agricultural development. One of the most important successes was the introduction, experimenting and promotion of Para Rubber. This became a major crop that brought great prosperity to the South East Asian region.

In the 1920's the garden spear headed Orchid breeding and started its orchid hybridisation programme. Today the 63 hectare gardens is home to a great diversity of tropical plants set in verdant landscapes. Over and above the Orchid garden the gardens also offer a glimpse into a rain forest with monster trees about twenty times as tall as me, a Evolution garden, Eco garden, Botany centre, swan lake, sculptures and a stage set in a lake for symphonies etc.

A tranquil getaway in the heart of the city as if time stood still for the last 150 years.

National Flower of Singapore:

Vanda Miss Joaquim - This orchid a hybrid between Vanda Hoorkeriana and Vanda Teres is hardy and free flowering. Described by the first director of the of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Mr. H.N Ridley in 1893, this was the first Orchid hybrid to be described from Singapore. Ridley named the plant after Agnes Joaquim in whose garden the hybrid originated. It was selected to be the national flower of Singapore in 1981.
